Do the employers verify your salary and time period served at your previous job? if yes then how?

Not that I want to bluff but am just thinking if there is any real check....

Well... bigger companies can and will surely do the verification before employing u..

At my previous job at a bank, VPs had regular sessions with HR to review these issues and ways to resolve them. I know that they hired outside consultants to formulate a policy and i guess most of the suggestions given by the consultants are in line with what is follwoed at other big companies.

They explained the verification to be done at the time of hiring and what should be provided to others about former employees, and what we should say if called on for a reference (and in simple words.... refer them to HR).

General policy followed is that date of joining and leaving is provided. some companies also confirm the amount of salary and bonus.

Come on Sunil, don't lie. Of course you were thinking about bluffing and thats the reason why you asked this question.

Anyway my answer is that though you might not get caught, but if you do tell a lie and are caught then u would have had it.. its a small world and therefore you can expect word to go around.

i would suggest that honesty is the best policy.. never ever lie abt anything on ur resume... its too much to risk.. and anyways HR people are trained to catch such lies...
following is an article from: [www.vinove.com] which talks abt Fraudulent resumes in India

Being in the position of an employer in India, it can be a tough call to differentiate the truth from the lie and to pick up genuine talent from the lot of faked ones.

When you find the “just right” candidate and then interview them, chances are high (mind you: experience is mandatory) that all of what is mentioned on the resume is a lie and perhaps the only truth is their name!

We have, in the past, found people mentioning incorrect educational qualifications or tweaking the credentials in one form or the other.Taking a tough stance, we decided against continuing with such employees.

We have over the past several months, tightened our reference checks and are no longer recruiting employees without a clear reference check using a land line and a conversation with their HR managers/someone up the heirarchy. We intend on further tightening this up and checking on the kind of projects that they mention having completed on their resumes.

I was notified that most of our ex-employees have faked their resume in one way or the other when they wanted to move to another organization. Some of the typical “enhancements” are:

- Incorrect designation.
- Incorrect project responsibilities to the extent that the projects that all they did was to hear of them were mentioned on their resumes.
- Technological know-how: “Anything that you hear of is what you know of”- seems like this is the trend amongst new job seekers.

Polishing what you know and marketing yourself is not bad at all - however, telling a lie to an extent when it could spoil the employee’s career and be a black spot for life, may be just too heavy a price to pay!

Besides, we as employers, need to ensure ethical hiring policies and be united. After all, what goes around comes around too!

Something to think about - food for thought!

agree with manisha abt being honest.. when i interview someone i can easily tell whether that person has done the work mentioned on his resume or not...

its very simple.. they might call up ur previous employer to verify the salary or the time perriod served by you there. However a smaller company may not have enough resourcces to do that whereas biggies can.

Recently TCS and Wipro fired some of its staff for lying on their resume therefore better be careful.

Do they check only the last employer or all the previous employers?

How deep the employer can go to verify and validate the new hire varies a lot. However, fwe comapnies like Fidelity atleast verifies with your last two employers.
However, for companies like TCS, Wipro, Infy when they are recruiting at a mass level and fighting hard for hiring and retention (in Q1, the top 4 Indian MNC had 10000 employees resigning), I find it really difficult and practically infeasible for them to carry out any kind of verification.
Of course, even after hiring once the employer come to know about the alteration/manipulation by the candidate, they can take strict actions. How they will come to know about it a question in itself.

Bhupal,
agreed that sincce companies are hiring huge numbers, therefore they might not have time to verify the candidate's details but as u rightly mentioned that even if they come to know about it later, they can take strict action, then why take the risk in the first place.
moreover how much can a person gain by inflating his / her salary.. eventually truth doe come out.

I'm really not supporting any kind of manipulation in your resume. I tried presenting the facts in most neutral manner with best of my knowledge.
As Manisha mentioned in her note, inflating designations, role, responsibilities, work experience, projects are very easily detectable in a well tuned recruitment process. I personally do it as part of my profile.
My intentions were to convey the fact that due to mass recruitment, you might get through in the initialy phases, but it will be caught sooner or later!
